KAT VIVA Kat Viva was born as Katja Viventsovae in the Far East of Russia, north of Mongolia, to Chinese and Jewish parents. She studied fine art at the Komsomolsk-na-Amure Art School, and in the studio of her mentor Alexander Tereschuk, as well as in those of others artist. Kat has presented her work at exhibits in Russia, Norway, Finland and Sweden. Some of her sketches were published in the catalogue of her exhibit, Sensitivities, in Finland in 1996. One of her watercolours, "After Skiing", was used as a cover image for the Canadian Journal, The Northern Review (1999). Kat has illustrated a book of poetry by R. Muller-Wille (1997), and an issue of the Norwegian sport journal, Fjellsportgruppa (1993). Her sketches, watercolour and oil paintings are permanently displayed at the Kola Scienece Center in Russie, the Arctic Centre in Finland, Lulea University of Technology in Sweden, and Tamarack House in Thunder Bay, Ontario. A natural teacher, Kat has taught beginner and intermediate art students in Russia and Canada (e.g., Pond Inlet, Nunavut; Marathon and Thunder Bay). Leading several international interdisciplinary projects and networks, Kat is also an accomplished environmental scientist, specializing in the impacts of human activities on soil and plants. Katja is now a proud 12+ month survivor of grade IV brain cancer. She now focuses on her art, both as a life-long passion and as therapy.
